Winter arrives in Spiti like a secret being told. Snow rolls down from the peaks, chasing prey into the valleys below, and somewhere in that quiet white world, the most elusive cat on the planet begins to move. The Snow Leopard. A creature so shy, so rare, that most people who live their whole lives dreaming of it never get the chance to see one. This winter, you might.
The adventure starts in Chandigarh, and from there, the mountains take over. We climb through Rampur, into the folds of Kinnaur, past the wild edges of Kinnaur valley, watching the landscape shift from green to grey to blinding white. By the time Spiti opens up in front of us, snowclad and silent, you'll feel like you've crossed into another world entirely.
We make our home in Chicham, a remote village perched above 14,000 feet, just past the legendary Kibber. Warm homestays with luxury hotels during transit, become our base camp for days spent hiking through snow with local spotting guides, the kind who read pug marks and know the mountains like old friends. Every hour outdoors is a lesson in patience, in cold, in the sheer thrill of the chase with comforts of on-sight service, dedicated porters and years of experienced wildife spotting team.
This isn't a regular wildlife tour. It's an initiation into a world that runs on its own rules, where survival means silence, and where every glimpse of a Snow Leopard is a gift you'll carry home for life.
View Full ItineraryWe start our day early, as we start with our journey to Spiti with the Chandigarh - Rampur leg.
Today, we’ll be leaving the city behind to move into the mountains, with great views of Churdhar peak, and Himalayas in the distance as we pass through Narkanda, and then move into the Satluj valley to reach Rampur. It is a town on the banks of Satluj river, 130 Kms from Shimla and also home to Padam Palace, standing in the capital of erstwhile Bushahr Kingdom.
Streets of Rampur still retain its old culture, while the palace is filled with history, and a glimpse into the past will be a great way to have a relaxing start to the trip.
This is going to be a long day, since we’ll be moving on towards Spiti, crossing Kinnaur on our way, and bidding goodbye to vegetation filled mountains, and saying hello to the barren landscapes of higher Himalayas.
We’ll be crossing Kinnaur region, Hangrang valley, bidding goodbye to Satluj river, and will eventually find ourselves journeying along the Spiti river.
Today is all about magnificent views on the way, and observing the changes in the landscape on the way as we move from lower ranges to the valleys along the highest of the Himachal Himalayas. We end the day in a homestay in Tabo, experiencing the comforts of a local life.
After the long drive yesterday, today we wake up in Tabo or Kaza, amidst the tall cliffs and Spiti Valley's surreal landscape. After a relaxed breakfast, we visit the biggest monastery of Kaza - Ki Monastery, heading further to the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary & Chicham village
Today is an acclimatization day as we adjust to the high-altitude terrain of Spiti. Please drink plenty of water and be well rested.
By afternoon, we check into our Chicham homestay, relax, and meet the local guides for our snow leopard tracking ahead.
Overnight at a homestay in Chicham.
Mornings start early here, while the sky is still soft and grey, and the mountains haven't quite woken up yet.
After breakfast, we set off on a short drive and sometimes walk fro an hour walk through snow-clad terrain, following trails that lead us into territory where sightings are guided by experienced team of spotters
Don't worry, our experienced spotters are already on the field to make these spots available for you and also our porters are available to carry the heavy equipments for you on all days
Once we reach our spot, we settle in. We camp out for the day, cameras ready, eyes scanning ridgelines and rock faces, watching for the faintest shift in the landscape that might give the Snow Leopard away.
We also have ample of opportunities to find Himlayan Ibex, Blue Sheep, Red Fox, Himalayan Griffon.
Our porters will offer packed lunch, tea / coffee & snacks in between to keep this as comfortable as possible for you
By late afternoon, we make our way back to the warmth of our homestay in Chicham / Kibber, stories and sightings shared over a hot meal.
The next four days follow this same rhythm, different ridges, different vantage points, with ample of opportunities to click the elusive animal. Out here, every single day could be the day.
Our last night of stay here at the camps, but in terms of sightseeing - it's another day of sighting the elusive snow leopard.
We once again leave for sighting with our spotters, and spend our time in the snowclad wilderness of Spiti. At the end of the day, we return to Chicham village for one last night in Spiti Valley.
Today is our last day at the sighting grounds.
We once again leave for Snow Leopard sighting with slightly heavy hearts and bags all packed, spending our time in the snowclad wildwerness of Spiti.
