Kinnaur, the land of demigods, isn’t what you think of when you think of Holi, and yet, it’s an experience you’ll never forget.
And so the lands where Himalayas rise from till the mountains,
where the sun rises from behind the Kinner Kailash,
and sets with the golden light illuminating the snowclad peaks,
where rivers boisterously flow through the dense cedar forests,
where prayer flags fluttered in the cold winds,
while the smoke emerges from the wooden cottages,
Those lands await to welcome the explorer in you, as they open up their secrets to bestow upon you the knowledge and experiences that stay unexplored by many,
Kinnaur Holi is one of the most unique celebrations in India, and something everyone should witness at least once in their lifetime to be able to understand the true diversity of India.
Here Holi is more of a carnival, being celebrated over a course of 3-4 days, with each day offering a multitude of colorful visuals in a land that stays deserted during the long winters. As the Holi comes along with the colors of Spring.
So come along with us, and explore what’s been unseen, and be a part of the journey that’ll open up a new world for you.
View Full ItineraryOn the first day of this Spiti Valley tour, we start our epic Himalayan road trip by driving to Kalpa.
Legend has it that Kalpa was the winter home of Lord Shiva. If it’s true, he couldn’t have found a more remarkable abode for himself, with enthrallingly majestic views of the Kinner-Kailash and Jorkandan peaks looming right above the village.
Overnight at a hotel in Kalpa.
Today we wake up to a beautiful sunrise over the Kinner Kailash range in Kalpa, and after local sightseeing we head to Sangla village. Here we will be visiting the historical village of Kamru, catching sunset from the temple there, and then observe traditional ceremonies in the village before Holi.
Overnight at a hotel in Sangla.
Today we visit the main temple of Sangla, where we will watch the Ramayana characters get ready for the procession. We will join the procession, which will walk through the villages around Sangla, dancing, singing, experiencing the local way of celebrating holi, eating with the locals, and also getting a taste of the local liquor. This will be the day when the Holi energy truly kicks in!
Overnight stay in Sangla
Today is the big day - we move to the Sangla temple to play holi. Almost the entire town will be slowly becoming part of the procession, which will then move through the rest of the town until dusk. In the evening, there’ll be holika dahan at the temple grounds.
Overnight stay in Sangla
Today is the day of Faguli - the festival marks the beginning of Spring. We will be joined by the idols of local Gods, who will be dancing along with the folks of Sangla town throughout the evening. It is a sight that one must witness, to see the way faith still binds the lives of people living in these parts of Himalayas.
Overnight at a hotel in Sangla
On this day, we drive to Rakchham, where we can hike and explore the beautiful meadows. After this we will drive to the last inhabited village of India towards Tibet border, Chitkul
Chitkul can be described as one of the most scenic settlements in the valley and the last inhabited village before the India-China border. This short drive from Rakchham to Chitkul will be one of the most scenic drives you’ll take with plenty of opportunities to take stunning photographs. Walk around the Baspa river and pay tribute to the Mathi Goddess at the temple in the village. After spending time in Chitkul, we turn around and head back to Sangla.
One can choose to visit the famous Mela of Sangla as part of the continued Holi celebrations or simply stay back and soak in the natural beauty of Sangla on our last night here.
Overnight at a hotel in Sangla.
On the seventh day of this Kinnaur Valley tour, we head back to our homes with a heavy heart but plenty of memories, new friends and such unique experiences that will stay with us for years to come.
We shall be back in Shimla after a 7 hour drive by 5-6 PM.
You can choose to take an overnight Volvo bus to Delhi, anytime after 8 PM.
